Train Padang Besar if you can handle one border walk — van from station ~50 baht per person to Hat Yai clock tower. Driving Sadao fine but immigration queues unpredictable weekends. With kids and bags, private car door-to-door might win on comfort.

KL → Padang Besar train → van. Total ~5 hours, smooth. Ignore touts charging 100 baht for 2 min ride at station.
